advice to Daphne - staying slim in France

Posted by Head Fly at 11:36 PM 0 comments
My imaginary friend Daphne has been writing to me again, needing more advice about fitting in here.  Since she arrived in France at the beginning of the year I've been helping her out with dinner etiquette, language problems and other technical points, today she has a problem that's more .... well let's just say that's getting bigger!

My darling Daphne

How lovely to hear from you again ma chérie, I was beginning to think that you'd forgotten all about me; that I was too provincial for you in my country home while you're in your chic Versailles apartment.

No surprise though, to hear what's troubling you this time!  Your petites rondeurs, tes kilos en trop, tes poignées d'amour - yup, you've been hitting the french cuisine since you got here last spring  and it's all gone to your hips.  Très classique!!

What you need is to start acting like a French girl - surely you've noticed how runner-bean thin they all are in Versailles.

There is no easy way around this ma chérie, you've got to change some basic habits:

The little boulangerie at the end of your street may make fantastic macarons, great croissant and amazing home made chocolates, but for a while the only way you should enjoy them is with your eyes!  You heard me ....  I know you see French women buying them, but that doesn't mean they'll eat them.  They gift macarons and chocolates at dinner parties, they buy croissant and pain au chocolat for their children's 4 pm snack and fancy cakes for a family gathering but they don't touch a crumb!

Even the delicious baguette will only be eaten in small bites, la française is unlikely to eat a whole portion of bread with her meal.

Wine - yes, I know it's wonderful stuff, it's sociable to drink and I know that your husband has an impressive wine cellar, but if you keep an eye on your French girlfriends they drink little.  Even at a chic dinner where there is different wine served with each course. It's all about moderation.

However, this doesn't meant you should cut down on the lunches with girlfriends:  très important to be in on the news, to be seen out and about.  Just do as they do: eat salad and fish; drink sparkling water ; no dessert and a couple of strong coffees.  The beauty of this is that you'll sit down and take your time, you'll eat slowly because you'll be chatting, and all that with very few calories.

Now,  I hope Daphne that you're not using your car each day.  You're in town, you need to walk or to use those wonderful bikes you can rent by the hour all over Paris.

Finally, I'll leave you with a word of advice I heard a French girlfriend pass on recently to another friend who was complaining that she had put on one whole kilo!  "You need a poor, young lover" she said, dead serious.  The girl just nodded in agreement, the logic of her friend's advice obviously crystal clear.   "Poor and young?" I asked, "why's that so important?"  they smiled at me  indulgently, "well," the first replied, "if he's poor he'll be living in some 6th floor garret without a lift, and if he's young then you'll be motivated to get up there to join him ...you know,  ... double the exercise!!"

Food for thought, darling you have to admit!

Let's meet up soon and have a long chat over a  .... mineral water,

your friend

{ Decorating a Fundraiser }

I'm helping to decorate for a fundraiser for my kids school this weekend.
I've been lucky enough to have a team of dedicated parents to help me with my vision
of our school's "Taste of the Town", an Autumn themed food, drinks, and game night for adults.

The objective was to keep the costs as L O W as possible. L O W as in free.
So we searched our homes and yards for things that would fit in to the theme.
Half the time I think the other parents thought I was crazy with some of my request.
But, they hung in there and worked their butts off!

I used Pinterest to help me create a vision for what I wanted the night to look like.
This really helped when I was trying to explain to my team what we needed to do to create
an event that was different than the usually school event.
My board for the event looks like this...

Are ya' gettin' the feelin'?
So, with all this inspiration form the online world, here's
what we have so far...

Burlap sacks for table toppers...

Small stumps for labeling items on the buffet and raffle table.
(which will be used at Thanksgiving for name cards)

Tons of Paper flower bouquets.

Paper & twine garlands.
Electric Candles.

And a pinch of Tiffany Blue added in for a burst of color.
(I didn't want to use typical "Fall" colors", so that's why I threw in the blue)

There's a lot more too.
Hopefully I'll take some photos of the set up and post them early next week.
Do you decorate for functions at your kids schools?
What do you do to cut costs? Any tips?

Etsy Obsessions This Week

Posted by Head Fly at 7:13 PM 0 comments
Just some fun shopping finds this week. Number three is a repeat, I've posted about this bag many times because I'm obsessed with it. Are you starting to compile your gift list for people yet? I've been collecting gifts for a number of months because I get SO flustered come the Holidays. I think I'm going to be buying online this year. I'm not putting myself through the madness of the mall, with maybe the exception of once - to get into the Christmas spirit. :)

teenage parties

Posted by Head Fly at 3:34 PM 0 comments

If you have teenagers in your house, how does it go when they want to throw a party?

A flat "NO!" ,
an enthusiastic "YES!",
or is it like here, ...  "LET'S NEGOTIATE" ......

Our 16 year old daughter planned to throw a Halloween party.   "Great idea", I said, "dressing up; get out the cemetery (yes, we have our own  cemetery); , simple food;  lots of fun .... what time will it finish?"

It's the word 'finish' that created our first hurdle.  It appears that  it is totally uncool to have a finishing time for a party these days, they prefer their celebrations to simply end naturally in a pile of bedraggled exhausted teenagers, probably at dawn.

I wasn't going down that road:   "Impossible" I pronounced, "you go back to school  on Thursday (they're on half term break) , you have to be on good form.   Let's say they go home at 2."

Now I thought I was being pretty generous and laid back here, but we quickly arrived at our second hurdle, this time the sticking point was the words  "go home"!!   hmmmm ......

I won't bore you with all the details but out of the 30 kids invited, we agree that 10 would stay over but ended up with 17!   ..............  what can I say?  Times are changing, parents are no longer prepared to come out at all hours to retrieve youngsters (?!).  In the summer it doesn't really matter, they can all sleep in tents in the garden, but last night it was close to freezing, they had to come indoors.

I won't tell you that I was sweetness and light at 3am when they finally went quiet, but this morning all was forgotten.  I was up early, laid out everything for a massive breakfast, complete with candles before leaving at 9 for a walk in the forest with the dog and a girlfriend.  I returned to find a happy, chatty table full of teenagers, getting through industrial quantities of bread and home made jam, taking turns to play the piano, ... my heart melted.

I know that I'll miss these years when the house is busy and full.  We love that our barn is big enough to host their parties,  and when it comes down to it, does it really matter if I have a sleepless night now and again?!
