{ Powder Room Update }

Posted by Head Fly at 4:45 PM 0 comments
It's a misleading title, I know.
It sounds like something has actually been accomplished in my powder room.
Something that only a plumber, electrician, or carpenter can do.
Alas, it's just me. Me, my ponytail holder, hot glue gun, drill, mini van...you get the idea.

In a dream world, this house would have been hopin' with all kinds of talented workers while I was away at the Philadelphia Home Show for what seemed like an eternity.  But, I don't live on a set of Extreme Home Makeover. So I came home to the house just the way I left it (umm, sort of, as in it was still standing).

There is a beautiful new floor in the powder room and laundry room.  But there's still no quarter round on the baseboard.
Did I ever tell you why this glorious event occurred? (I'm talking about the floor)

A pipe under our laundry floor was cracked. So few a few weeks, the floor looked like this.

I'm happy to have the floor back and my prized trash find back home again home again, jiggity jig.

Still working on the sink. I'm thinking of this one from Philadelphia Salvage.

I love the grass green I recently painted the walls.

but mostly happy to have my distressed blue dresser back home!

Before + After: Basement Bathroom

Posted by Head Fly at 8:25 PM 0 comments
You've seen bits and pieces of it coming together. But since the inspector just signed off on it (I know it took us awhile...only because it took us awhile to remember to call him!) it seems fitting to do the reveal. We did everything ourselves, except for the plumbing + drywall. Sources are listed at the bottom of this post. This is what we started with as we rebuilt the bathroom. This photo is actually a few steps into the process, having replaced the plumbing under the house, new concrete floor, new walls, insulating etc. etc. But it's a starting off point...

And this is what we created.....

One major choice was the pocket door. I highly recommend this, as it is the best thing for a small space. The other major element is the stand up shower. I love, love the shower. Eventually we'll put in a glass wall but it's not an issue right now, and not much water spray happens. The shower set it Moen, and I adore having the toe kick. (See this post on the shower) For those unaware of the toe kick, it means I can test the water temperature with my foot, prior to getting sprayed.

We created a DIY pivoting mirror after falling for one at Pottery Barn, but not falling for the price. (See this post on how we did it)

Since the bathroom is in my workspace (the basement is my studio/office) it seemed fitting to offset the formality of the finishes with some cheekyness. I created this art.

One of the neat elements is this pivoting toilet paper holder. Honestly people, this is the best invention. No springs flying everywhere!

And there you have it. Our basement bathroom. :) Amazing to see the progression of how it all came to be. (See all of the posts here) I'm kind of uber impressed at my husband. :) Next up...Master Bath! ;) (Kidding...kind of)

{ Smoke & Mirrors - A Bathroom Reveal }

Posted by Head Fly at 5:11 PM 0 comments

okay people...
everyone's dying to know...
"How'd I paint the tile"
and "darn, my tub is pink
or I'd do the same thing"

Well, get out your brushes & rollers -
'cause my tub was pink too
and it still is.

A shower curtain, it's an amazing thing.
It's like a permanent
"Before and After"

I used oil based KILZ over the old pink tiles.

I rolled it on with a sponge roller.
I let the KILZ dry for a few days, then went over it with Semi-Gloss Latex paint.

Here's where the white tile ends and the old pink begins.
I even still have the metal attachment from the shower doors.

Can you even notice the pink tile with this gorgeous floor in your sight?

The only time the curtain is open is when my kids are taking a bath.
Other than that they are always closed.
My kids could care less what color their tub is.
I'm pretty sure the girls would be disappointed if it was anything BUT pink.

The only other time it might be open, is if a house guest is nosy.

Here's the break down
  • 2 quarts Ben Moore Paint - $36.
  • 1 quart Kilz Paint - $8.
  • Knobs for the cabinet - $15.
  • Flooring - $60
  • Shower curtain - $25.
  • Window Fabric - $15.
  • Shutters - $67.
  • Drawer shelf on wall - $7.
  • Curved Shower Curtain Rod - $30.
  • Light Fixture - $33.
  • Glass shades - $15
  • Towel Ring - $9.
  • Bath mat - $10.
  • Toilet Seat - $20.
That's a $352 renovation!

Here's an old drawer I picked up at the Perkiomenville Flea Market today.
The chippy paint is perfect.

{ Bathroom Reveal }

* F i n a l l y *
{and why did I keep the toilet paper & toothbrush holder pink?}

Ta-da

remember the *before*

&

and more
*befores*
here

The bathroom is my 2 year old son's, but is also used by overnight guests.
{And my girls refuse to use their own bathroom, so I guess it's theirs too.}
I think it's a nice mix of
masculine
&
feminine touches.

This mirror covers many sins.
Under it is a secret passageway to the Man Cave.
{not really, but it's large enough to be}
We took out the old medicine cabinet, with sconces attached,
and hung this larger mirror right over the hole.

The ruffled shower curtain is an Anthro knock off.
It photographs very well, but has this ewey polyester feel in real life.
But, I'll keep her anyhow.

The floor was a surprise bonus, that I didn't think was really going to happen.
It's an off the rack laminate from Home Depot.
Honestly, it really wasn't knockin' my socks off in the store.
I just bought it 'cause I was sick of this project draggin' out.
But, I gotta say, I am in LOVE with it.

Ahh, there's that floor again.
{Yes, it's slapped right over the old floor}

I attached some cotton rope to the tips of the
seeded glass shades for some added texture.

The mirror has been around for ages.
I don't think I've ever hung it.
I put a coat of chalkboard paint on it for this bath....
and ta-da , new life to the un-used mirror.

Oh, the messages you could write to your little darlings.

Why didn't I paint the old pink toothbrush holder?
{that'll go on my to-do list for the next year}

The ceiling is Ben Moore, Silver Marlin

I pulled the colors from this fabric...

which will eventually be mistreated into a valance
over those great white shutters.

The walls are Revere Pewter from Ben Moore.

A much nicer view from the hallway.

{Progress in the Quick Fix Bathroom Project}

Posted by Head Fly at 1:57 PM 0 comments

I know it doesn't seem like much,
but remember the before

I used oil based KILZ to cover the old gray & pink tiles.

I let the KILZ dry for about 24 hours.
Then I covered it in latex semi gloss
{Swiss Coffee - by BEHR}

the vanity has been painted the same black as all the doors in the house.

I don't know why I left the toothbrush holder and the soap dish pink?

no knob yet, still deciding

shutters are up
wallpaper is down

and something has to be done with those brass hinges...

it's amazing what a black toilet seat can do to a white toilet.

and one more addition to the room,
if I can get someone to remove the toilet for me...I've got a great surprise
